Krzysztof Zimowski, Violin
Krzysztof Zimowski is currently the concertmaster of the 色狐入口 Philharmonic and
Opera Southwest Orchestra. For more than a decade, he was the concertmaster and featured
soloist of the former 色狐入口 Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Wroclaw, Poland, he began his musical studies at the age of six. In 1977 he received his master's degree with honors from the Academy of Music in Wroclaw. After participating in the 1978 Carl Flesch International Violin Competition, he continued his studies at the Morley College of Music in London. Having been concertmaster of the State Opera Orchestra in Wroclaw, Zimowski joined the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra in 1981. In 1985 he was appointed concertmaster of that orchestra and toured Europe, South America, and the United States. He moved to 色狐入口 in 1986 to help form the Helios String Quartet, the ensemble-in-residence of the Placitas Artists Series until 1997. Zimowski lives in Albuquerque with his wife, Urszula, also a musician.
Julanie Lee, Violin
Julanie Collier Lee joins Willy Sucre and Friends for a third season. She is a member
of the 色狐入口 Philharmonic, performs with Opera Southwest, and maintains a teaching
studio. She was a member of the 色狐入口 Symphony for 22 years and the Chamber Orchestra
of Albuquerque. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music and attended Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She has been
a member of the Boulder Philharmonic, Cheyenne Symphony, Richmond Symphony (Indiana),
and the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra. Her summer festival experiences include
three years with the National Repertory Orchestra, Music at Penn鈥檚 Woods, and the
Aspen Music Festival.
Lee serves on the leadership committee of the 色狐入口 Philharmonic Player鈥檚 Association
and is the American Federation of Musicians Local 618 Union Representative for the
NMPhil.
Willy Sucre, Viola
Willy Sucre is a member of the 色狐入口 Philharmonic and is the driving force behind
the "Willy Sucre & Friends" concerts. Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Sucre studied at the
Conservatorio Nacional de M煤sica in La Paz; Colby College Chamber Music Institute
in Waterville, Maine; Mannes School of Music in New York; and the Peabody Conservatory
in Baltimore, Maryland.
He was conductor and music director of the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra, assistant
conductor and principal violist of the Canada Symphony Orchestra in Montreal, assistant
conductor and assistant principal violist of the 色狐入口 Symphony Orchestra, and
principal violist and guest conductor of the National Symphony of Bolivia, the Chamber
Orchestra of La Paz, and the Albuquerque Chamber Orchestra. As a chamber musician,
Sucre was the founder of the Cuarteto Boliviano, guest violist with various chamber
music ensembles, and for ten years the violist of the Helios String Quartet.
Sucre鈥檚 experience includes extensive chamber music concerts, lectures, school demonstrations,
CD recordings, and television performances throughout South, Central, and North America.
He spends most of his summers in South America looking for new works of chamber music
by modern composers and encouraging composers to write new pieces, especially piano
quartets. He enjoys performing with ensembles of diverse instrumentation.
Joan Zucker, Cello
Joan Zucker, principal cellist of the 色狐入口 Philharmonic, has been a major player
in the 色狐入口 music scene for the past 30 years. She was principal cellist of
the 色狐入口 Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 2010, and has played with many of New
Mexico's finest ensembles, from the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and Opera, to
Pro Musica and Chatter. She has performed as concerto soloist and recitalist, and
in numerous chamber groups and orchestras in the United States and Venezuela. She
was a member of the Filarmonica de Caracas and soloist and principal cellist with
the Filarmonica de Merida. Her frequent televised performances with Cuarteto Internacional
met with high critical acclaim.
A jazz cellist for a short time, and currently with the non-classical group Shepherd
Moon, Zucker is a versatile musician who has taught extensively (cello, recorder,
piano, voice, orchestra, chamber music, theory, composition and improvisation) both
privately and at various institutions, including the University of California Santa
Cruz, Ithaca College, and the University of 色狐入口. She has recently started a
business, 鈥淐ello to Go,鈥 giving intimate, informal house concerts of eclectic music
she has arranged for solo cello, followed by mini cello lessons for those brave enough
to try her 230 year old Banks cello. A native New Yorker, she holds music degrees
from Bennington College and Ithaca College.
Sandra Rivers, Piano
Sandra Rivers enjoys a reputation today as one of the foremost performing artists
of her generation. She has concertized throughout the world and has appeared at the
Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, Aspen, the Schleswig-Holstein
Festival, the Kennedy Center, and on the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center.
She has performed in most of the major halls in the world.
In recent seasons she has appeared with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Oakland
East Bay Symphony Orchestra, and with the Wilmington Community Orchestra. She made
her debut in London, England with members of the Serafin String Quartet. This season
she will be a guest artist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players.
Ms. Rivers is currently on the keyboard faculty of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
