 Academic Advising is a collaboration between advisors and students; the advisor provides information and resources for the student's academic, professional, and social development.

NMT's strength is that students are advised by faculty in their major. The relationship that develops between the faculty advisor and student can be academically and professionally beneficial.

Process for new (incoming) undergraduate students

The NMT Registrar handles all of the preliminaries to academic advising, and works with Department Chairs to connect new, incoming students to New-Student-Advisors.    Note that the latter are not necessarily the student's permanent advisor. 

 If you are a new student and have any questions or concerns about the advising process, please contact our Registrar's Office (registrar@nmt.edu; 575-835-5133).

Process for current students

The student should "meet" (via Zoom, a phone call, or email exchange) with their permanent advisor to discuss their course schedule for the following semester.  Once the advisor approves the student's schedule the student will receive a code (APIN) from the advisor that will allow them to complete their registration online.

 

• Know degree requirements, relevant school policies, and deadlines.
• Be open to developing and clarifying academic and professional goals.
• Research university programs and courses.
• Regularly consult faculty advisor and degree audit systems.
• Use campus academic, social, and professional resources.
• Be respectful: be on time and prepared for scheduled meetings.

• Uphold the integrity and value of the degree by maintaining University standards and policies.
• Listen carefully and respect the student鈥檚 questions, concerns, and problems.
• Collaborate with the student to develop academic and personal goals.
• Communicate core, major, and minor degree requirements.
• Provide appropriate referrals and resources.
• Say 鈥渘o鈥� when that鈥檚 the appropriate answer.

The Office for the Dean for Student Success Initiatives provides help with academic success planning, early intervention for students having academic difficulties, and advises all dual credit and special undergraduate students.
