Physics Department Program Learning Outcomes
Undergraduate Program
PLO1: Students will begin to master the knowledge of physics, including:
a. equations of motion,
b. minimum principles,
c. conservation laws,
d. application of mathematics to physical problems.
e. Concept of fields
f. The correlation between classical, quantum and other 鈥渕odern鈥 approaches.
PLO2: Students will begin to master the basic skills of physics, including:
a. oral, written, and graphical communication,
b. computing,
c. laboratory techniques.
PLO3: Students will use the principles of physics to solve problems.
a. Recognize the importance of organizing the problems
b. Learning how to check that an answer is reasonable by looking for alternate
ways to solve or estimate the answer.
PLO4: Students will gain experience in research through one or more of the following:
a. Working with a professor on a funded research project
b. Participating in a summer REU at Tech or elsewhere
c. Through industry or national lab internships
d. Through laboratory courses provided in EVERY year of the curriculum.
PLO5: Students will have the ability to effectively apply the tools of physics to problems in a related field.
PLO6: Students will develop as independent thinkers.
Graduate Program
GPLO1: Students will master the fundamental knowledge of physics.
GPLO2: Students will master analytical skills to solve problems.
GPLO3: Students will apply physical, mathematical, statistical, and computing skills
to a problem in their area of specialization.
GPLO4: Students will communicate scientific results in written, oral, and graphical
form to experts and the public.
GPLO5: Students will become independent learners and researchers.
